Phenol
Phenol is used extensively to create various products that we encounter in our daily life. Among the many products that depend on this crucial raw material are plywood, window glazing, DVDs and CDs, computers, sports equipment, fibre glass boats, automobile components and accessories, circuit boards, and flat-screen televisions.
The production of important chemical products including phenolic adhesives, polycarbonates, and epoxy resins, which serve as crucial raw materials for numerous industry sectors, depends on phenol.
The production of Bisphenol A (BPA), which is made from phenol and acetone, is the single largest market for phenol. BPA is then used to create epoxy resins and polycarbonate, which is its most common and fastest-growing end-use. Epoxy and polycarbonate resins are both employed in a wide range of industries and in many objects that we use every day.

Applications
Bisphenol A
- Bisphenol A is used to make polycarbonate plastics.
- It’s used in the manufacture of epoxy resins and vinyl ester resins.
- Bisphenol A formaldehyde resins are a subset of phenol-formaldehyde resins. They are used in the production of high-pressure laminates.
- BPA is used as a developing agent in thermal paper.
Phenolic Resins
- Phenolic resins are used for a number of applications, such as Bakelite, molding powders, laminating resins, adhesives, binders, surface coatings, billiard balls, laboratory countertops, circuit boards, fiber glasses, brake pads, brake shoes, and clutch discs. They find extensive use in the rubber industries.
Alkylphenols
- Alkylphenols are used to make alkylphenol ethoxylates, which are widely used as industrial surfactants. They’re used as emulsifiers for polymerization, as detergents and pesticides, and in the processing of wool and metals.
- Alkylphenols are organic industrial chemicals used in the production of lubricating oil additives, laundry and dish detergents, emulsifiers, and solubilizers.
- Used in hair care products, as additives in plastics, and as antioxidants.
Caprolactam
- Caprolactam is used to make Nylon 6 filament and Nylon 6 is widely used in fibers and plastics.
- Caprolactam is also used in the synthesis of several pharmaceutical drugs including pentylenetetrazol, meptazinol, and laurocapram.
1, 1, 1-Tris (4-hydroxyphenyl) ethane THPE
- This special molecule is used as cross-linking or branching agent for polymers like polycarbonates, epoxies, and polyesters.
- Given its “tri” functionality, it finds applications in hyperbranched systems suitable for adhesive and coating applications. Additionally unique properties like low viscosity and high thermal resistance make this an ideal candidate for demanding applications.
- THPE yields polymers with a wide range starting from soft materials to hard highly crosslinked materials.
4-Hydroxybenzoic Acid
- 4-Hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) is a white crystalline solid that is widely used in organic synthesis. In particular, its esters, called parabens, are used as preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.
Diphenolic Acid
- Diphenolic acid is widely used as a chemical intermediate in paint formulations, protective and decorative coatings and finishes, lubricating oil additives, cosmetics, surfactants, plasticizers, and textile chemicals
